The arrival of this high-tech firm illustrates the strength of Vancouver’s tech ecosystem and in turn, the addition of this firm – and others who follow – continues to deepen and diversify the technology expertise here, contributing to Vancouver’s growing reputation as a city that has to be on the radar for international tech firms.
CoMedia Design announced the opening of it’s Canadian head office in Vancouver, British Columbia in July 2017. CoMedia, founded in 2015, is a San Franciscobased web and mobile app designer and developer. Its clients span the globe, and include Vodafone, VMware and other multinational brands. CoMedia will bring its Silicon Valley knowhow to mentor and support start-ups and entrepreneurs, while tapping into the local market for skilled talent and to expand its client base. “Vancouver is highly-regarded as a city that is particularly conducive to starting a business, with world-class talent and innovation. As CoMedia has grown and expanded beyond Silicon Valley, Vancouver was the logical next step for us,” said Kenneth Yang, Co-founder and Director of Product, CoMedia Design.
UNION MOBILE FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGY
Union Mobile Financial Technology (UMF) launched the Canadian headquarters of its subsidiary, Union Mobile Financial Technology (Canada) in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 26, 2017. UMF is a leading provider of fintech services based in Beijing, China. The company provides a range of services, including financial information services, online, mobile & cross-border payments, financial management services and merchant solutions. UMF has a growing customer base of over 700,000 small and medium-sized businesses and 450 million individual users. UMF Canada’s Vancouver office will serve as its Canadian headquarters, adding to its existing North American presence in New York and California.
MAPLE LEAF EDUCATION
Maple Leaf Education launched the official opening of its North American head office in Vancouver in February 2017. The firm is a subsidiary of China Maple Leaf Educational Systems, based in Dalian, China. Since 1997, China Maple Leaf has operated offshore schools certified by the BC Ministry of Education. As of 2016, the firm runs 56 schools in 15 cities across China and has graduated 1,400 students. Maple Leaf Education North America has MOUs in place with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The company operates a school on TRU’s campus that currently enrolls 58 students in grades 10-12. The launch of Maple Leaf’s North American headquarters represents the first step of the company’s international expansion plans for university preparatory schools, a model which it expects to expand across Canada and the United States.
HQ Vancouver was excited to join Beijing Capital Airlines in January 2017 to mark the opening of the company’s head office in North America. A subsidiary of HNA Group, Beijing Capital Airlines is engaged in flights for international and domestic travel. The firm’s headquarters in Vancouver will serve as the airline’s administrative, operations, and sales office, and over time may host the parent company’s expanding interests in North America, particularly in travel and tourism. In addition to the opening of its office, Beijing Capital also launched a thrice weekly service between Vancouver and Hangzhou (via Qingdao), the firm’s first North American destination. A further expansion of the airline’s route network is on the horizon as the company prepares for the launch of additional flights to Portugal, Austria, England, Russia, Australia and the USA in the next two years.
POLY CULTURE NORTH AMERICA
Poly Culture Group, China’s largest art and culture company, opened its North American head office in Vancouver in November 2016. Poly Culture is a subsidiary of China Poly Group, a state-owned corporation with operations in international trade, real estate development, culture & arts, energy and other industries. Poly Culture plans to use Vancouver as its base for expanding at least three lines of business into North America: art business and auctions; film investment and cinema management; and performance & theatre management. To mark the opening of its art gallery and head office, the firm displayed an exhibition of precious treasures from its permanent collection in China. The exhibition included four bronze-cast animal heads, part of a collection of 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac that adorned China’s famed Old Summer Palace in Beijing. The display of these pieces marks the first time these heads have been exhibited outside China since being repatriated from western collections. The opening was also accompanied by a performance by the China Philharmonic Orchestra at UBC’s Chan Centre. As the only regional headquarters set up by Poly Group in North America, Poly Culture’s presence in BC will help to strengthen cultural ties between China and Canada.
The local gaming industry was welcomed to a tour and grand opening of Fire-Point Interactive’s North American head office in October 2016. Fire-Point is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Match-Light Interactive Entertainment Technology Corp, a mobile game publishing company based in Beijing. Located in Burnaby, Fire-Point Interactive’s head office consists of a gaming studio and research & development facility. The firm is focused on virtual reality (VR) development & design, VR technical training and mobile games. As a great testament to the high-quality of talent in BC’s tech sector, Fire-Point has hired graduates from the Centre for Digital Media’s Masters of Digital Media Program to support the development of its VR activities.
Pacific Aquaculture is the subsidiary of Linghai Shenziting Sea Cucumber Hatchery, a leading seafood producer in China’s Liaoning province. Launched in September 2016, the company established its international head office in Powell River, BC, also the site of the firm’s shellfish hatchery and future farming and sales operations. Pacific Aquaculture plans to expand into the North American market, followed by potential growth into international destinations. In addition to its traditional aquaculture activities, the firm has also established a research and development partnership with the China Liaoning Ocean & Fisheries Institute. Pacific Aquaculture is also establishing relationships with BC-based academic institutions to advance scientific research on shellfish aquaculture.
Xiamen Airlines opened its Canadian head office in Vancouver in July 2016. Based in the city of Xiamen in Fujian Province, China, the airline is the 5th Asian carrier to provide direct flights from Vancouver to China. The airline has 171 planes and flies to over 75 destinations throughout the world. Xiamen Airlines is in the process of developing offices in downtown Vancouver and at YVR.
Having opened its North American headquarters in Vancouver in February 2016, Aikang Capital is a private equity fund firm that focuses on a variety of investment opportunities, including in the medical technology, hospital, and health management sectors in British Columbia. Aikang Capital is a subsidiary of Beijing Aikang Group, a Chinese conglomerate with interests in medical investment, commercial real estate development, securities & mutual funds and leisure & hospitality.
F-Pacific is the Canadian subsidiary of China Fiber Optic Network System Group, China’s largest manufacturer of fibre optic connectors. The firm is the North American leader in ceramic ferrule manufacturing, which is used in the development of fibre optics products. Due to unforeseen circumstances, F- Pacific opted to consolidate its functions into its downtown Vancouver office and maintain its Richmond office focused on R&D.
In May 2015, Istuary Innovation Group announced the expansion of its offices in Vancouver into the firm’s global headquarters. Istuary Innovation Group is a technology company with a mission to connect local technology to global markets. The firm leverages its strong expertise and close ties with the Chinese market to develop innovative technology customized for markets in China, North America and beyond. Istuary specializes in technologies in the following areas: storage technologies; IC design; smart industry; big data analytics; machine learning and internet of things. The firm currently has 200 employees in its Vancouver office, with additional locations in Toronto, Ottawa and Waterloo.
MOUS SIGNED TO OPEN HEAD OFFICE
In January 2016, Zhiye Photoelectricity signed an MOU with HQ Vancouver to upgrade its Vancouver sales office to its North American headquarters, and to open an R&D and production facility in Burnaby. Zhiye has future plans to eventually transition its global head office to its Burnaby premises. The company specializes in precise photo-etching technology and is a producer of high-quality photo-etching products. The firm is making significant capital upgrades to its facilities, and has been working with developers to re-structure a new industry property for its lab, production needs and administration offices. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in Winter 2017.
VALHALLA GAME STUDIO INTERNATIONAL
Founded in 2008, Valhalla is a gaming company originating from Tokyo, Japan. In March 2016, the firm publicly announced the relocation of its global headquarters to Vancouver to take advantage of BC’s existing gaming cluster. Valhalla’s head office will be established once the company’s future plans for an IPO are completed.
BEIJING PERFORMANCE & ARTS GROUP
Established in 2009, the Beijing Performance & Arts Group (BPAG) consists of 15 performance groups that has produced and hosted large performances, including arts and show events at Tiananmen Square, “China’s Three Tenors” concerts, and operas at the Bird’s Nest (National Stadium). The company signed a Letter of Intent with HQV in November 2015, and is continuing to explore opportunities for opening a headquarters in BC.
